The Post Office delivered this book (hard copy) only three days ago. I barely had time to look at it read the introduction, the Table of Contents, selected parts of the book chosen at random. I love it and cannot wait to read it in full. I like the fresh approach to the stories of the bible, presented from a modern perspective.
The effort reminds me of the re-writing of the Bible 150 years ago by Thomas Jefferson he tried to remove from the original text all references to miracles and metaphysical events.
I hope that Mandel will soon surprise us with a sequel, dealing with the Gospels and the New Testament.
It's a charming work and the author's "voice' is casual, humorous and quite effective. His pleasure in writing the book is evident. I confess I am ignorant about the Bible and know only the major stories, and those I read 50 years ago. My judgement about the book is therefore based on the few stories where I can appreciate Mandel's humor. The chronology appendix is enlightening.
